Willington should spend money wisely

Letter to the Editor Michelle Doucette Cunningham Willington

Willington will vote March 28 if they will build a new preK-8 school to replace two schools standing for 70 and 100 years.

They have served us well for decades but are in need of serious repairs to address basics like air circulation and safety. So many, in fact, that the net price tag of a new school, counting operating savings, will be $18-26 million, but a “no” vote will mean $19 million in repairs for the old ones.

The money will be spent anyway. What will be better — spending millions to repair the old, and do that again and again, or investing in a prosperous future?

It’s just a better deal, supports our students, and is the responsible choice. But the discussion has gotten muddy with a handful of fear mongers and conspiracy theorists trying to create confusion with make-believe numbers, posting hypothetical scenarios and resorting to name-calling online.

Willington is a small town where we generally live and let live, helping out where we can.

We shouldn’t let a few prophets of doom lead us to shirking our duty to best educate those who don’t yet have a vote.
